Insulation Types Covered by Government Grants
The ECO4 Scheme and the Great British Insulation Scheme offer grants for various insulation types to improve your home’s EPC. Here are the main types available under these free grants
Loft Insulation Grant
Loft insulation costs up to £1,000, but you can save full amount with British Grants. Loft insulation helps prevent 35% of heat loss through the attic. The materials, usually wool glass or polystyrene, are provided for free.
Eligibility
- Your home has a timber roof structure.
- You live in a top-floor flat with a pitched roof.
- The loft is clear and uninsulated or has less than 100mm of old insulation.
- Old insulation, typically yellow or pink, should be replaced with modern materials like dark grey or brown insulation.
Cavity Wall Insulation
Cavity wall insulation can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £5,000, but you can avoid this expense if you get grants. This type of insulation fills the gap between two wall layers, preventing 30% of heat loss. Polystyrene beads are mostly used insulation material on cavity walls under the grants.
Eligibility
- Your home is over 30 years old with cavity walls.
- The external walls have equally-sized bricks, indicating a cavity.
- The home hasn’t had cavity wall insulation before.
Internal & External Wall Insulation Grants
Solid wall insulation is very expensive and costs from £8,000 to £20,000, which you can save under grants. This insulation works for both internal and external walls, adding a layer of material coated with render or cladding. Mineral wool or expanded polystyrene are ideal insulation materials used for solid wall insulation.
Eligibility
- Homes with solid or poorly insulated walls are prioritised.
- Internal wall insulation is common for heritage or listed buildings, where external work is restricted.
